With a year to go until the bicentenary of Britain's abolition
of the slave trade, a new resource is now available for churches,
groups and individuals wanting to learn about modern slavery and
the campaign to eradicate it.
Act to
End Slavery Now has been published by set all free
(part of Churches Together in England) and Anti-Slavery International,
the world's oldest international human rights organisation.
The new publication details both the different forms of slavery
today, which affect millions of men, women and children throughout
the world, and connects them to the past. It shows how the Bible
was used to condone or condemn slavery, and challenges people to
take action today - through lifestyle choices and campaigning.
James Walvin, Professor of History at the University of York, says,
"this publication is an excellent launch pad for the urgent
need to complete the task of those early abolitionists. It is also
a persuasive reminder of the degree to which past history intersects
with our contemporary lives today: slavery then and slavery today."
"This is a unique moment in our history to join together
in highlighting and destroying the evil of modern slavery which
thrives in the shadows of the 21st century," stated Joel
Edwards, General Director, Evangelical Alliance.

- Act to End Slavery Now is published by set
all free (part of Churches Together in England) and
Anti-Slavery International, founded in 1839 by the same
abolitionists who led the 1807 campaign, which continues
to work for an end to slavery throughout the world and
is the leading organisation in this field.
- set all free has been set up by Churches Together
in England as a collaboration between the churches,
church-related groups, organisations and statutory bodies
who are comfortable with its Christian ethos, on the
relevance of the 2007 bicentenary of the Abolition
of the Slave Trade Act, particularly in terms of
historical truth-telling, issues of legacies and modern-day
slavery. The project aims to highlight how the abolitionists'
values can transform our relationships on an individual,
community and society level.
