About
Quobna Ottobah Cugoano
Quobna
Ottobah Cugoano was
born in about 1757 on the coast of present day Ghana in
the Fante village of Agimaque. He was kidnapped in 1770
at about the age of thirteen and sold into slavery on the
West Indian plantations of Grenada. At the end of 1772 he
was taken to England where he became one of the first and
most radical Africans in England to fight against slavery.
He wrote many letters which were printed in London newspapers,
and published Thoughts and Sentiments on the Evil and
Wicked Traffic of the Slavery and Commerce of the Human
Species in 1787 and a shorter version of it in 1791.
It is not known what happened to him after 1791 because
no other records of him have been found.
