On 1 April, a safe house for trafficked children opened in the
United Kingdom; six months after the only safe house for trafficked
children in the country was closed.
The new safe house will provide trafficked girls and boys, aged
16-18, with housing in a safe environment and specialist support,
including medical care, legal advice and education; children younger
than 16 will be placed with families.
The home will be run by an independent company meaning that,
even though it is based in England's south-east, children trafficked
to other parts of the country can be referred to it. The previous
safe house, run by West Sussex Social Services from 1999 to 2003,
was only available to trafficked girls living in that area.
