London conference examines slavery and colonialism

10 November 2000

The Africa Centre in London is holding a one-day conference on 4 December, on the legacies of slavery and colonialism. Participants will examine the views of Europeans and Africans on this subject and consider what needs to be done in order to tackle unfinished business on the issue.

Even though important developments in relations have taken place over the past 40 years, important issues remain unresolved leaving many Africans feeling that Europe owes some form of acknowledgement of past wrongs. Similarly, in Europe there are differing views on this issue. Some agree that there needs to be acknowledgement of the harm caused by colonialism and slavery, while others feel that the negative impact is countered by positive aspects of the European encounter.

This unresolved chapter remains important for current and future relations. The implications of not addressing the legacies of slavery and colonialism are significant for political and economic relations.
