From the clothes we wear, to the food we eat and the vital medical equipment used by doctors and nurses – human rights abuses and environmental destruction often take place to get these products made and brought to us in the UK.
Businesses should be responsible for any abuses that take place in their supply chains. But at the moment, current laws are not strong enough to hold these companies to account.
With a new law on business, human rights and the environment it would be mandatory for companies to carry out human rights due diligence. That means, they would have to identify, mitigate and prevent abuses in their supply chains – and failing to prevent this would have repercussions.
On Tuesday November 28th in the House of Lords, Baroness Young of Hornsey introduced a groundbreaking Bill focused on human rights and the environment, named the Commercial Organisations and Public Authorities Duty (Human Rights and Environment) Bill. If passed, the Bill would be the UK’s very first law requiring companies to carry out human rights and environmental checks in their supply chains and, holding them accountable if they don’t prevent harm.
For the Bill to progress and be seriously debated, we need parliamentarians to understand the widespread support for this proposed law. So, we’re asking you to take action today by emailing your MP and expressing your support for the Bill, asking them to sign the pledge.
