The UK government has announced plans to create a new law that aims to stop people crossing the English Channel to seek asylum in the UK.
Let’s be clear: this proposed law is cruel, inhumane and totally unworkable. If passed, it would allow the government to deny asylum and protection from modern slavery to anyone entering the UK via irregular routes.
This puts people at risk and further fails victims of trafficking. The impact of this bill will be that any modern slavery victims who arrive through routes that the UK government deem as irregular will be prevented from accessing support. These are people who have already been denied their rights and freedom – and now they would be further dehumanised.
The United Nations refugee agency has already said that this law would amount to a ban on asylum. The law would violate the human rights of people in need of safety and protection.
