For many Uyghurs in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, daily life is shaped by surveillance and control. Parents are separated from their children. Some children are sent away to state-run residential schools. Adults are forced to work far from home. Refusing work is not an option.

Even as attention fades, the Uyghur people continue to face state-imposed forced labour.
