We all know we need a rapid energy transition for our climate, planet and all life on it. But it cannot come at the expense of human rights.
MP Sarah Champion has submitted an amendment to the Great British Energy Bill to ensure that the new energy company it creates operates to the highest ethical standards. A special committee is discussing it this week.
If the amendment passes, it will not only ensure the government’s own company respects human rights but also pave the way for discussions about tougher legislation that all companies should be held to.
We believe that ensuring forced labour or other human rights abuses don’t exist in a company’s supply chain shouldn’t be the choice of a company – it must be the law.
MPs from across major parties agree on the need for stronger laws to prevent forced labour in supply chains. This is our best chance in years to make real progress. Solar energy can’t be truly clean if people are abused making it.
We need a new law to hold business and the public sector to account when they fail to prevent supply chain human rights abuses and environmental harms.
That’s why we’re calling for a new UK law to make sure companies do everything they possibly can to ensure their supply chains are free from human rights abuses and environmental destruction.
